5 Signs Your Body Is Carrying Stress You Haven't Dealt With
1. You're tired no matter how much you sleep. It’s not only about sleeping, but a general unsettledness. You are not lazy. You’re tired in a way rest doesn't fix. It is a deep exhaustion. You find yourself saying, “I’m so tired” or “this is exhausting.” It could be the trauma your body is quietly holding that your mind hasn't had space to process yet? Your exhaustion does not go unnoticed by the One who made you. He sees you. He knows you and He does not look away; He wants to carry you as you step out in faith.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28
2. You startle easily or feel on edge for no clear reason. You jump at loud sounds. You brace awaiting a hurtful or critical statement. You feel anxious but can't explain why. “Something’s wrong and I can’t figure out what it is.” That's not you being dramatic or as some might tell you that you are just too sensitive — that's your God-designed body doing exactly what it was built to do: protect you. Sometimes the message that you're safe now just hasn’t been interpreted.
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." — John 14:27
3. You apologize constantly, — even when nothing is your fault. You second-guess yourself. You struggle to recognize your needs. If this is you, your body has learned to make itself small to avoid conflict or rejection. That pattern became engrained somewhere on your journey, being small felt safer than being seen. You suffer alone believing that your needs are too much, your feelings don’t matter and that you are not enough. This is survival. And it makes complete sense.
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works." — Ephesians 2:10
4. "Pain is the only protest in the human constitution that something is wrong. It is the only thing that raises its voice against existing abuses." — Diane Langberg, Suffering and the Heart of God. Learn to listen to your body. The slight ways it tenses up in certain relationships or environments. Tight shoulders. Held breath. A knot in your stomach before a relational task. Your body knows things before your mind admits them. That tension is not weakness — it's insight. God designed you with these signals. Learning to listen to it is part of healing.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him." — Proverbs 3:5–6
5. Do you ever feel that you are just going through the motions? You feel empty, flat or numb. You may be angry and struggle to overcome it. You are functioning, but something inside feels distant. This can be your body telling you that you are overwhelmed or your nervous system is trying to protect you. You may not feel safe if you learned that your feelings were dismissed. You may feel broken and feel you have no true value. You may even feel as if you don’t have the energy to pray or study God’s word. Remember, God meets you where you are.
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." — Psalm 147:3
